The UTV Cleaning Products That Actually Get Mud Off

Dried mud is not dirt. It’s a mineral crust that has bonded itself to your plastics, and it’s the reason ordinary car wash soap runs straight off without doing anything. You can scrub a fender for ten minutes and watch the water go clear while the panel stays brown.

The fix is not a better soap. It’s a different order of operations.

Water pressure does most of the work

Before any product touches the machine, the crust has to be softened and knocked loose. A garden hose will not do it. You need pressure and you need to let the water sit long enough to work into the mud.

An electric pressure washer in the 1,900 to 2,300 PSI range is the sweet spot for a side by side. Go much higher and you start forcing water past seals and into places it should not be, particularly around bearings, decals and any exposed wiring.

The Westinghouse ePX3100 is the one I keep recommending. It runs about 1,900 rated PSI, which is enough to strip a week-old mud layer without stripping your graphics. It’s short, it’s under twenty pounds, and it has an onboard soap tank so you’re not carrying a separate bucket around the machine.

What I don’t love about it: the quick-connect nozzles are plastic and they will eventually crack if you leave them out in the sun. Buy a spare set early. The 25-foot hose also sounds like plenty until you’re working around a four-seater, and it isn’t.

Skip the zero-degree nozzle entirely on a UTV. It’s a paint stripper.

Foam is what actually breaks the bond

Pressure knocks the loose stuff off. Foam is what gets under what’s left.

Thick foam clings to a vertical panel long enough for the surfactants to work into the mud and lift it off the plastic. Spray-and-rinse soap slides off in about four seconds and takes nothing with it. This is the single biggest difference between people who get their machine clean and people who spend an hour and give up.

The Chemical Guys TORQ Foam Blaster 6 is a foam cannon that runs off a regular garden hose. No pressure washer required, which matters if you’re washing at a campsite or a friend’s place. The ratio dial lets you run thin for a rinse or thick for a first pass on dried-on mud.

Be honest about what it is, though. Hose-driven foam is not pressure-washer foam. It’s noticeably thinner and it will not cling as long. If you already own a pressure washer, get a proper cannon that fits it instead and skip this one. The Foam Blaster earns its place when you don’t have pressure, not when you do.

If you want one box and no decisions

Buying wash, degreaser, detailer, mitt and brushes separately means five orders and a lot of second-guessing about what works with what.

UTV interiors are almost all hard plastic, vinyl and rubber, with a screen somewhere in the middle. You want one cleaner that’s safe on all of it.

The order that actually works

Most people wash a UTV like a car, top to bottom, one pass, done. That’s why it takes so long.

Do this instead.

1. Rinse everything with plain water and walk away for five minutes. Let it soak.
2. Foam the whole machine and leave it another five minutes. Do not let it dry.
3. Pressure rinse from the bottom up, then top down.
4. Agitate whatever is left with a brush, then rinse that section immediately.
5. Interior last, once the exterior is done dripping.

The waiting is the part everyone skips, and it’s the part doing the work. Chemical dwell time beats scrubbing every time.

What to skip

Dish soap. It strips wax and it will dull your plastics over time. It’s cheap for a reason.

Anything labeled “wash and wax” for off-road use. The wax component just traps fine dirt against the surface. Wash and protect as two separate steps or don’t bother.

Pressure washing the clutch intake, radiator fins or any bearing. Fastest way to turn a cleaning session into a repair bill.

Rinse the machine the day you ride it, even if you don’t wash it properly until the weekend. Wet mud comes off with a hose. Dried mud needs everything on this page.
