Your UTV windshield is almost certainly polycarbonate, and polycarbonate is soft. You can scratch it with a fingernail. You can definitely scratch it with a paper towel.
That’s why so many of them look hazy after one season. It isn’t wear. It’s thousands of tiny scratches from dry wiping, and every one of them is permanent.

Never use glass cleaner
Most glass cleaners contain ammonia. Ammonia attacks polycarbonate at a chemical level, causing crazing, which is a fine web of surface cracks that starts at the edges and spreads inward.
Once a windshield is crazed it cannot be repaired. Not polished out, not filled, not rescued. You buy a new one.
The same goes for anything with alcohol as a primary solvent, and for most household all-purpose sprays. If the label does not say it’s safe on plastics, assume it isn’t.
Rinse before you touch it
Dust on a UTV windshield is not house dust. It’s sand and grit, and dragging it across soft plastic is exactly the scratching mechanism you’re trying to avoid.
Flood the panel with plain water first and let gravity carry the abrasive off. No wiping, no pressure, no contact. Only once it’s visibly clean of grit does anything touch the surface.
Then work with a genuinely wet surface. A dry or half-dry panel is where scratches happen.
What to use
For routine cleaning, Novus Plastic Clean & Shine No. 1 is the standard answer and has been for years. No abrasives, no harsh solvents, and it leaves an antistatic film that means the panel attracts less dust between rides.
It’s a cleaner, not a polish. Existing scratches stay exactly as they are. It also does very little against baked-on bug residue, which needs a soak rather than a spray.
OUR PICK

Novus 7020 | Plastic Clean & Shine #1 | 8 Ounce Bottle
- 8 Ounce clean and shine squeeze bottle
- Excellent for polishing out scratches in windshields, helmet shields, goggles, and significantly reduces haziness
- Contains no abrasives or harsh chemicals and leaves a smooth, clean, greaseless shine and resists fingerprints
Plexus does the same job and adds a wax layer that seals the pores in the plastic. That’s the one to reach for if your machine lives outside, because the film gives you a bit of UV and debris resistance that a plain cleaner does not.
It costs more per ounce than anything else here, and the aerosol runs out faster than you’d expect. Some people also find the film shows fingerprints more readily right after application. It settles after a day.

If your windshield is already hazy, cleaning it will not help. You need to remove material. Meguiar’s PlastX is a mild abrasive polish that levels the surface around fine scratches and restores clarity to plastic that has yellowed or clouded.
Understand what you’re doing before you start. This removes a thin layer of your windshield, so it’s a rescue operation, not maintenance. Work in the shade on cool plastic, small sections, and stop when it’s clear. Deep gouges will not come out and trying harder just makes a soft spot.

The towels matter more than the spray
This is where most people undo everything else they did right.
Paper towels are wood fiber. They scratch polycarbonate. Shop rags hold grit from the last job. An old t-shirt has seams and whatever was in the wash with it.
Use plush microfiber, use a lot of them, and fold rather than bunch so you always have a clean face. The Meguiar’s Supreme Shine six-pack is cheap enough that you can retire one the moment it hits the floor, which is the actual discipline here.
Wash them separately, no fabric softener. Softener coats the fibers and turns a microfiber towel into a smearing tool.

Bugs and tree sap
Soak, do not scrub. Lay a wet microfiber over the spot and leave it five minutes. Whatever is stuck rehydrates and lifts off with almost no pressure.
Scrubbing dried bugs off polycarbonate is how a clear windshield becomes a cloudy one in a single afternoon.
Two more things worth knowing. Fold your windshield down or cover it when the machine sits outside for weeks, because UV degrades polycarbonate from the surface in. And if yours is a folding design, clean the hinge area too. Grit collects there and grinds into the panel every time you move it.
